Prague for First-Time Visitors vs Second-Time Explorers + FREE MAPS🗺️😮
A Local's Guide to the Classics, the Quirky, and the “Wait, How Did I Not Know About This?”
Prague is one of those cities that people fall in love with instantly… and then realize they didn’t even scratch the surface.
This guide separates the two:
✔ What to do on your first-ever trip (the essentials, done smartly)
✔ What to do when you return (the unusual, the artsy, the underrated)
Everything is based on how real locals — and Real Prague Guides — would spend their time.
Old Town Square
🌟 PART I — Prague for First-Time Visitors
🎒 The Perfect 3-Day Itinerary (local-approved, crowd-avoiding, hangover-compatible)
This 3-day itinerary is designed for travelers who want to experience the very best at a calm pace. See Prague’s most famous sights — the Astronomical Clock, Charles Bridge, and Prague Castle — as well as hidden, off-the-beaten-path attractions in the city center. A video guide will also be available at the end of this section.
DAY 1 — Old Town, Charles Bridge & River Life
📌Start at Charles Bridge (7–8 AM, yes, really🙃)
If you go later, the Charles Bridge becomes a live-action Human Centipede with selfie sticks. Go early → peaceful, golden light, actually enjoyable.
Pauseteria Cafe
📌Breakfast (the non-Czech kind as well!)🍳
Locals’ breakfast is a bread roll with cheese while running for the tram, but you will have more time to relax and enjoy the delicious food 🥐Breakfast is usually ~250 CZK, and cappuccinos cost 100 CZK.☕
📌Old Town Before 9 AM
Your essentials:
Old Town Square - beautiful architecture! Take as many photos as you can before the crowds arrive!
⏰Astronomical Clock - try to make it to the earliest show at 8 am or 9 am.
💡Church of Our Lady Before Týn - A hidden entrance is located in the passage of the house in front of the church. This church is free to enter!
⭐Then wander behind Týn street into the quiet medieval lanes that 99% of tourists never find.
View of the Old Town from the Powder gate
📌More Old Town Highlights
Jewish Quarter (3–4 hours if visiting interiors) - you only need a ticket if you want to go inside the synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery💡
Estates Theatre and Charles University - two cultural landmarks of the Old Town
Powder Gate - a Medieval Gothic gate to the city, where 100 Spitres City Tours start the Old Town and Charles Bridge Tour every day!❤️ Join us⬅️
Havel’s Market - the oldest market in Prague that was opened in 1232!😮
National Museum
📌Afternoon Options🏛️
☀️ Sunny: relax on Prague’s islands — Slovanský, Kampa, Žofín. Rent a paddle boat or watch others cruising 🛶
🌧 Rainy: The National Museum gives you culture and shelter. Check out our Prague Indoor Activities Video!
Náplavka
📌Dinner + Drinks🍻
Rest your legs and savor some traditional Czech cuisine: variations of meat, bread, and sauces, and wash it down with a refreshing glass of the best beer in the world!
And if you still have the energy, head to Náplavka (the Prague riverbank) for a drink at one of the boat bars or local cafés!

St. Vitus Cathedral
DAY 2 — Prague Castle + Lesser Town (Malá Strana)
📌Start at Újezd → Funicular to Petřín
Enjoy views from Petřín Tower and wander through the gardens. Buy and validate your ticket unless you enjoy surprise fines.🚨
⚠️The Petřín Funicular is scheduled to open in spring 2026. As an alternative, take tram 22 or 23 to Pohorelec.
Strahov Library
📌Strahov Monastery
🩷Beautiful library + monastery beer = happiness.
⚠️Regular admission does not cover the entrance to the library halls, but you will be able to see them as we did in the picture above (from the doorstep).
📌Loreto → Nový Svět → Hradčany✨
A gorgeous sequence of quiet streets, artist corners, palaces, and one of Prague’s best hidden places (Nový Svět).
Big Change of Guards
📌Big Change of Guards at noon
Make sure to check out the Big Change of the Guard at 12:00 PM, which takes place daily in the first courtyard of Prague Castle. Arrive by 11:50 to secure a good viewing spot!
🍲Lunch BEFORE the Castle
Make sure to stuff your belly before you enter the Prague Castle area! Inside, you’ll basically get an overpriced sausage or an overpriced coffee.

📌Prague Castle🏰
Should you buy a ticket?🎟️ — Prague Castle grounds are free to enter. Anyone can visit daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. The gardens and the Deer Moat are open for the summer season from April 1 to October 31. However, the castle sites require an entrance ticket, which can be purchased at the castle ticket offices located in the Second Courtyard and in front of St. Vitus Cathedral.
⚠️Beware of online Prague Castle ticket resellers. They do not offer senior discounts and inflate prices with so‑called complimentary offers.
Get it if you want to visit inside:
St. Vitus Cathedral - A stunning Gothic cathedral.
Golden Lane - A quaint street with little, colorful houses.
Old Royal Palace - A former seat of the Bohemian royal family.
St. George’s Basilica - One of the oldest Christian temples in the city.

📌Walk Down to Malá Strana✨
Must-sees:
Wallenstein Garden - A peaceful Baroque garden with statues, fountains, peacocks, koi fish, and a grotto wall.
John Lennon Wall - A feel-free-to-draw wall that acts as a Freedom of Speech monument.
Kampa Island -A perfect picnic spot with a couple of cafés and a museum of modern art.
St Nicholas Church of the Lesser Town - The most beautiful Baroque shrine in Prague.
📌💡Dinner in Malá Strana — or Smíchov for cheaper options.
DAY 3 — Vyšehrad + Your Favorite Neighborhood
📌Vyšehrad Fortress
Vyšehrad is a former royal residence and a fortress where locals love to come to relax and enjoy the sweeping views of Prague city centre. We wrote an article about what to see in Vyšehrad, but the biggest site there is the stunning neo-Gothic Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul.
Getting to Vyšehrad:
By metro: Get off at Vyšehrad station (red line) and follow the signs to the fortress. It takes around five minutes.
By tram: Take a tram to Výtoň and climb uphill.
💸Shopping
Finish with shopping at Na Příkopě / Palladium / Chodov (the biggest mall in Prague, but outside the city center).

🌟 PART II — Prague for Second-Time Explorers
Your second visit is where Prague truly becomes yours. No postcard agenda. No crowds. Just unusual neighborhoods, art, perhaps, a bit of nature, and places that locals love and frequent.
Day 1 — Žižkov & Karlín: The Local Side of Prague
💡Optional Stop 1: Franz Kafka’s Grave (Olšany Cemetery) - for a longer walk!
Not as grim as it sounds. Olšany is peaceful, beautiful, and atmospheric. Kafka wrote the famous line, “Prague won’t let you go. This dear little mother has claws.” — appropriate for a second visit, when the city pulls you deeper in.

📌🚶♀️Walk to Jiřího z Poděbrad
Prague’s neighborhood heart: cafés, farmers’ markets, and Plečnik’s iconic Church of the Most Sacred Heart (inspired by Noah’s Ark).
Choose Your Main Activity:
📌OPTION 1 — Žižkov TV Tower
Once voted the second ugliest building in the world
Also kind of iconic
Costs 300 CZK for a view of… Žižkov
If you like weird architecture — go! If not⬇️
📌OPTION 2 — National Military Museum at Vítkov
Highly underrated:
Admission free😮
Multiple floors
Immersive exhibits
Rooftop café
Great if you enjoy military history, weapons, and other intense things
📌👀Walk Through the Spooky Tunnel to Karlín
Yes — an actual spooky tunnel connects Žižkov and Karlín. On the Karlín side: "Don't be scared." You really have nothing to fear—only very fast bikes!
Kasárna Karlín
🍹Karlín Highlights
Neo-Romanesque Church of Sts. Cyril & Methodius
Kasárna Karlín— locals’ favourite hangout spot
David Černý’s massive statue “Lilith” (24 meters tall, touching a building with her boob)
Farmers’ markets and events
Great food scene🍽️

Day 2 — Holešovice, Art, and Troja
It is time to explore the most hipster place in the Czech Republic! Holešovice is a former industrial district, now home to several museums and art galleries. It also has two of the biggest park areas in Prague, which offer opportunities to relax and watch locals. Troja, located just across the bridge from Holešovice, also has plenty to offer, especially for families with kids and adventurous explorers.
📌DOX Contemporary Art Museum or Trade Fair Palace
Take it from someone who is extremely hard to please when it comes to contemporary art: I thoroughly enjoy visiting DOX! Yes, some exhibitions are a bit unsettling, so perhaps don’t bring your little ones to those, but the famous Zeppelin is cool to see.
If you want to check out the classics, I recommend the Trade Fair Palace, which houses the most extensive collection of art pieces. It's also in Holešovice, so you won't have to go far!
📌Czech Technical Museum
Czech Technical Museum — great for a rainy day!🌧 : Even if science scared you at school, you’ll enjoy it. It is an enormous museum, so plan at least three hours for your visit.
🗺️📌Check out a FREE Prague Museums map here ⬅️
📌Stromovka Park☀️
Prague’s “Central Park.” Huge, calm, beautiful. Perfect place for a picnic!
📌Troja Botanical Garden
If you enjoy a long stroll among exotic plants, I recommend spending half a day at Troja Botanical Garden. Don’t forget to visit the tropical greenhouse “Fata Morgana” to admire the butterflies.
📌Troja Château (March–October)
If you are visiting between March and October and want to be truly impressed, head to Troja Chateau. This Baroque palace — with a staircase designed as a theatre, Flemish frescoes, giants falling into Tartarus, and an entire garden labyrinth — is one of Prague’s best "I had no idea this existed" places.
End at Letná Park
Not exactly hidden anymore, but always stunning:
The Metronome
Beer garden
River views
Expo 58
A perfect place to end a two-day deep dive into local Prague!
⭐ Final Thoughts: Which Prague Is Better?
Your first trip shows you why Prague is beautiful. Your second trip shows you why Prague is unforgettable. On the first visit, you gather the must-see photos. On the second visit, you gather the stories. Either way — Prague is always a wonderful idea!
